London Weidenfeld & Nicolson 1973 0297766333 / 9780297766339 First Edition / First Impression Hardcover Very Good+ Very Good+ Book 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
Unclipped dustwrapper. No marks are inscriptions. Gold lettering to a spine. Illustrated. The memoirs of Charles E Bohlen encompass nearly 35 years of Soviet American relations. From the pen of one of America's foremost experts on the Soviet Union come new disclosures, fresh insights, and penetrating assessments regarding the momentous events that have shaped the world since 1934. Bohlen was there. He helped open the first American Embassy in Moscow in 1934. He attended the last of the great purge trials of the 1930s. While still a young diplomat, Bohlen learnt to a secret source in the German Embassy of the impending Nazi Soviet pact which soon startled the world. Transferred to Japan, he was interned when Pearl Harbour was bombed and a few months later saw Dolittle's planes bomb Tokyo. Taken into the White House, Bohlen became President Roosevelt's interpreter and an adviser at the wartime conferences with Churchill and Stalin at Teheran and Yalta, and President Truman's interpreter at Potsdam. After the war he was principal adviser on Soviet affairs to three secretaries of State through a succession of Cold War crises from the threat to Iran to the Korean War. His four years as ambassador to the Soviet Union covered the death of Stalin, Khrushchev's rise and the secret speech denouncing Stalin, the Hungarian Revolution, and the Suez crisis. Bohlen was a close associate of President Kennedy as both adviser and interpreter. Later, forgoing his speciality of Sovietology for five years,Bohlen went to Paris, where, as ambassador, he experienced an extraordinary combination of De Gaulle's friendship and hostility. Rounding out on his career,Bohlen advised President Johnson on Soviet affairs, the Vietnam war, and the invasion of Czechoslovakia.
