1 Onyeama, Dillibe Nigger at Eton
London Leslie Frewin 1972 First Edition / First Impression Hard Cover Very Good + Very Good
Unclipped dustwrapper. No marks or inscriptions. Gold lettering to spine. The most outrageous book ever published on life in the world's most famous public school. Since Eton College was founded by Henry VI over 500 years ago as a catholic grammar school for local boys, it has maintained a singularly unique place in the British scholastic system and a way of life. From the Wars of the Roses right up to the era of the 20th century welfare state, it has been indivisibily interlocked with the many social, religious and political upheavals and changes of Great Britain. It has produced scores of eminent men, distinguished in politics, world affairs, industry, the sciences, religion, education, commerce and the arts. To take politics as one example, of the 1000 peers listed in 1970 as members of the British House of Lords, no fewer than 366 were educated at Eton. A staggering total! In this first account of a coloured boy's life at the school, he tells in vivid detail of his own background, of his arrival at the school, of the curriculum, of his reception by other boys (and Masters), of his punishments. He tells, too, of what he alleges was cruel colour prejudice and his reactions to it, of his superiority at sports, of his distressing relationships with several of the boys, of homosexuality at Eton, violence and the alleged practice there of witchcraft and Black Power "happenings". But this is no one-sided picture. The authors just as ready to tell a story against himself as he is to recount unhappy experiences at the hands of his schoolfellows and, in some cases, Masters. In the literature of over 80 books and essays which have been written on Eton college across several hundred years, there's surely has been nothing quite as riveting on the subject of this world-famous public school as Nigger at Eton which, incidentally, is the author's own title of his work. Very nice and clean internally and externally. First edition means first edition, first printing unless otherwise clearly stated.
