1 Bethell, Nicholas The Palestine Triangle : The Struggle Between the British, the Jews and the Arabs, 1935-48
London Andre Deutsch 1979 023397069x / 9780233970691 First Edition / First Impression Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
Unclipped dustwrapper. No marks or inscriptions, gold lettering to spine. Illustrated. Mapped endpapers. In the 1930s and 1940s Palestine was a triangular puzzle that defied solution. Who owned it? The Arabs, who inhabited the area for over a thousand years and who, at the beginning of this century, formed 90% of its population? The Jews, whose land it had been for many centuries before they were expelled by Imperial Rome? Or the British, whose troops rode into Jerusalem in 1917, dispersing the Ottoman Empire and gaining possession by right of conquest? The Palestine triangle is the most comprehensive account so far of the bitter struggles of the last dozen years of the British mandate. The author has unearthed startling new evidence about many of the most controversial issues: the Arab revolts of the 1930s, the little death-ships and the King David Hotel explosion, planned by Irgun guerrilla fighters under Menachem Begin. He has fully investigated the activities of all the various terrorist movements, both Jewish and Arab, as well as the measures taken against them by the British authorities, and suggests that some of the most notorious acts of violence, especially the assassination of Lord Moyne, did indeed have an effect on the decision-makers. He has examined numerous government archives recently made available, and has interviewed scores of participants - politicians, terrorists, soldiers and policemen - who have only now broken their silence. His exposure of behind-the-scenes activities leads him to the inescapable conclusion that expediency and personal emotions played a much greater part in determining the course of events than has hitherto been acknowledged. Step-by-step, often with the emotion but always with fairness, the author skilfully unfolds one of the most tragic stories of our time - and Britain's failure to fulfil the terms of her mandate and of broken promises on all sides. Nice and clean internally and externally. First edition means first edition, first printing unless otherwise clearly stated.
